Data Scientist in global demand – SP Jain’s New Bachelor of Data Science

More data has been created in the past 2 years than in the entire history of the human race and some estimate that approximately 2.5 quintillion bytes of data is being generated everyday. Within 5 years there will be over 50 billion smart connected devices in the world,  and who else than a data scientist to comprehend and manage all this information?

For a typical Fortune 1000 Company, just a 10% increase in data accessibility will result in more than $65million additional net income. There is no doubt that the global demand for data science and computing expertise exceeds supply with predictions of a major shortage of analysts for at least the next 10 years.

What is data science?

In an increasingly digital world, a Data scientist plays a very big role in driving decisions, innovation, productivity and success. Big Data analytics has changed the way organisations identify trends and challenges, as well as new opportunities. This means that Big Data has the potential to bring about enormous social and economic benefits.

“ the ability to take data and the ability to understand , process, extract value , visualise and communicate is going to be an important skill ”

Google’s Chief Economist Dr. Hal

S P Jain’s Bachelor of Data Science (BDS) is a 3-year course designed to prepare graduates who can conduct data-driven investigations, and conduct visual and advanced analytics by acquiring and managing data of all types. Through this course, graduates will develop an in-depth understanding of data science and the techniques for analysis of quantitative and qualitative data to arrive at solutions. They will be able to identify patterns in order to predict trends from analysing data from various sectors such as manufacturing, banking and finance, retail and healthcare.

Is this for you?

The dominant trait among data scientists is an intense curiosity—a desire to go beneath the surface of a problem, find the questions at its heart, and distil them into a very clear set of hypotheses that can be tested.

On a practical level, applicants must have completed high school/junior college/IB Diploma or an equivalent form of higher education (with a total of 12 years of education). S P Jain also requires applicants to undertake the S P Jain Entrance Test and a Math Test as well as attend a personal interview. The interview is designed to assess communication skills, subject knowledge, and analytical skills. The admissions team will shortlist applications based on past academic performance, entrance test scores, English language proficiency, subject knowledge, analytical skills, and other achievements. If your application has been shortlisted, you will be called in for further evaluation.

What types of jobs can you expect?

The Bachelor of Data Science equips students to fill the need for data expertise in practically every field imaginable – from IT, Consulting and BFSI to Healthcare, Education, Retail, and Media. Data Science graduates will be well positioned for careers in data mining, data modelling, data architecture, extraction, transformation, loading development and business intelligence development, and for roles like Data Scientists, Analysts, Developers, and Consultants.
