Scholarships for international students at the University of Western Australia

The University of Western Australia (UWA) is encouraging students to pursue excellence in their studies and is offering a range of scholarships to prospective international students to support them financially.

There are five types of scholarships:

  1. The International Achievement Scholarship
  2. Undergraduate Scholarships
  3. Postgraduate (Coursework)
  4. Postgraduate (Research) and
  5. International Loyalty Program.

UWA Scholarship Detials and Criteria

1. UWA International Achievement Scholarship

The UWA International Achievement Scholarship is a scholarship for high-achieving undergraduate and postgraduate students who have citizenship from India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam, and who apply for selected courses within the study areas of Commerce, Engineering, Computer Science and Data Science.

The Scholarship is an annual tuition fee discount for the normal full-time duration of the awardee’s course as specified in their Letter of Offer (up to AU$20,000 for postgraduate and AU$30,000 for undergraduate courses). The value of the Scholarship is determined by the applicant’s equivalent Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) or UWA Weighted Average Mark (WAM).

Eligible students are those who:

  • Have citizenship from the countries previously mentioned and meet the criteria for entry at UWA.
  • Are commencing an eligible undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree within the study areas of Commerce, Engineering, Computer Science or Data Science at the University in Semester 2, 2019.
  • Have not submitted previous university study for credit towards their intended degree course at the University, except for under approved articulation agreements of students from Sri Lanka. Students from Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam and Indonesia who are applying for the Advanced Standing Scholarship are exempt from this condition.

Note: The duration of the advanced standing scholarship is capped at a maximum of one semester. An equivalent ATAR is determined by UWA Admissions having regard to the previous study used to gain entry into the University. Equivalent scores may vary occasionally, and Advanced standing scholarships will only be awarded for Semester 2, 2019 applications.

2. Undergraduate Scholarships

UWA currently offers a number of undergraduate scholarships for eligible students from China, India, Indonesia, Mauritius, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and The United States of America.

UWA’s undergraduate fee discount scholarships will be awarded to eligible students from China, India, Indonesia, Mauritius, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Vietnam (from selected schools) and The United States of America (members of the National Society of High School Scholars), who have demonstrated high academic achievement in their high school studies and who have been accepted to undertake a Bachelor’s degree at UWA, commencing in 2019.

The value of the scholarship is based on the applicant’s equivalent Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) and awards a scholarship from AU$3,000 to AU$7,000 per year.

Applicants from United States of America must upload a letter confirming they are NSHSS members in the documents section of the application. The other applicants to the University are automatically considered and do not need to submit an application for this scholarship.

In addition, there are scholarships for eligible students undertaking courses provided by the Business School and the Faculty of Science.

3. Postgraduate scholarships (Coursework)

The International Master’s by Coursework Scholarship program is awarded to students who have demonstrated academic excellence in relevant undergraduate studies at an overseas institution and will undertake an applicable Master’s by coursework commencing in 2019.

International students who have completed and achieved excellent results in their undergraduate degree at an Australian university may be eligible for UWA’s International Master’s by Coursework Scholarship if they enrol in an applicable degree in 2019.

The value of each scholarship will be determined by the applicant’s undergraduate academic achievement as below:

  • Level 1: AU$3000 per year – Equivalent WAM of 70 to 74.99 in an Australian undergraduate degree
  • Level 2: AU$5000 per year – Equivalent WAM of 75 to 79.99 in an Australian undergraduate degree
  • Level 3: AU$7000 per year – Equivalent WAM of 80 or more in an Australian undergraduate degree

Master’s by Coursework Scholarships will be awarded to eligible students from

  • Asia – Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, India, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Timor-Leste, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, Bhutan
  • South America – Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, Venezuela

Every Faculty administers their courses and each one will set specifically which citizens from the countries previously mentioned are available to apply for the scholarship. Either way, applicants to the University are automatically considered and do not need to submit a separate application for this scholarship.

Note: Specific course offerings in some subject areas may differ slightly for Indian students.

UWA provides some postgraduate scholarships to Mexican, Colombian, Brazilian and Guatemalan students who are recipients of scholarships or funding from CONACYT and FIDERH in Mexico, COLFUTURO, ICETEX and COLCIENCIAS in Colombia and GUATEFUTURO in Guatemala.

4 Postgraduate scholarships (Research)

There are two major scholarship schemes for postgraduate students interested in research courses.

UWA China Scholarships through The China Scholarship Council (CSC) and The University of Western Australia (UWA) which are offering postgraduate research scholarships each year to students from the People’s Republic of China who intend to undertake a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree at UWA. Applicants, who are citizens and normally residing in China at the time of application, and enrolled or registered in a Chinese University, may apply for a UWA China Scholarship.

The UWA English Language Bridging Scholarship is a 10-week pre-course English language program, offered free of charge to selected students who have been offered a PhD place at UWA and have not quite achieved the UWA English entry requirement.

To be eligible for the UWA English Language Bridging Scholarship, the student needs to be accepted for a PhD place at UWA and have an IELTS: score of 6.0 overall, with a minimum of 5.5 in each band or TOEFL iBT: 70 with a minimum score of 20 in the writing section, 19 in the speaking section, 17 in the listening section and 14 in the reading section.

5. International Loyalty Program

The University of Western Australia (UWA) recognises the importance of education for families. UWA’s International Loyalty Fee Discount Program offers reduced fees to the third and subsequent siblings of international students who have studied or are currently studying at the University.

To be eligible students are required to be an international student and meet the criteria for entry to a degree course at UWA, have or have had a sibling currently or previously enrolled in a degree course at UWA and meet course progression requirements to be an ongoing recipient of payment.
